Robert Kirk, minister of Aberfoyle, describing the subterranean people and the seers who can see them as a naturalist would describe a neighbouring nation — the first book on the subject in English, written in 1691, unprinted until 1815, and the reason everyone after him had the words for it. He died the next year on the fairy hill above his own manse.
