Abydos — the 'helicopter' hieroglyphs
FOLLOWAbydos (Sohag), Sohag
DIRECTIONS →OVERVIEW
The 'helicopter hieroglyphs' are part of a carving in the Temple of Seti I at Abydos: a palimpsest in which the titles of Ramesses II were carved over those of his father Seti I.
HISTORY
Seti I's original reads 'Powerful of scimitar, who suppresses the nine bows … Menmaatra'. Ramesses II had the signs filled with plaster and re-cut as 'Two Ladies: protector of Egypt, who repels foreign lands … Usermaatra-Setepenre'. Over time the plaster eroded, leaving both inscriptions partly visible.
REPORTED ACTIVITY
In ancient-astronaut circles the overlap has been read as an out-of-place depiction of a helicopter and other modern machines. The 'helicopter' is pareidolia: a bow sign from Seti I's titles and two arm signs from Ramesses II's (Peter J. Brand, 2023; Joshua Roberson, 2016). Filed UNVETTED.
