The Ancient Ram Inn

OVERVIEW

A Grade II* timber-and-stone house at the bottom of Wotton-under-Edge, Gloucestershire, late medieval in origin and remodelled in the sixteenth century, once a pub and said to have been built for the masons of St Mary's church. John Humphries bought it in 1968 and lived in it until his death in 2017, telling anyone who came of the incubus, the witch's room, the bones under the floor and the twenty ghosts; his daughter Caroline keeps it as an events venue for paranormal groups and it has been on Most Haunted and Ghost Adventures.

HISTORY

The house's documented history is that of a small-town inn on a pagan-to-Christian site that local tradition places on a ley line. The claims of child sacrifice and devil worship are Humphries's own, made over decades to visitors and television crews; nothing in the record supports them.

REPORTED ACTIVITY

Guests report being pushed on the stairs, a figure in the Bishop's Room, cold and a sense of pressure. The Ram's reputation is the reputation its owner built for it, sincerely and for a long time; the entry records that and no more.

Not open casually: bookings for group investigations through the owners. A private house in a residential street.
