DIRECTIONS →OVERVIEW
The September 17, 1862 Battle of Antietam left roughly 23,000 men killed, wounded, or missing in twelve hours; the sunken farm road at its center became known as "Bloody Lane." The field is preserved and administered by the National Park Service.
REPORTED ACTIVITY
Visitors and rangers report phantom gunfire, the smell of gunpowder in the fog, and marching figures along Bloody Lane; one often-retold account describes schoolboys hearing a chant near the Irish Brigade's position that sounded like a Christmas carol.
VISITING
Open to the public with a visitor center, driving tour, and walking trails.
