Ape Canyon
FOLLOWCougar, WA
DIRECTIONS →OVERVIEW
A gorge on the southeast shoulder of Mount St. Helens, within what is now the Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument, named after a widely reported 1924 incident.
REPORTED ACTIVITY
Prospector Fred Beck and four companions claimed their cabin was bombarded with rocks overnight by large, ape-like creatures after Beck said he shot one; the story was extensively covered in contemporary newspapers and became a foundational case in Sasquatch/Bigfoot lore, though a common alternative explanation points to local youths throwing rocks.
