OVERVIEW

Castle Hill was the site of a Tlingit fort before the Russian-American Company made it the seat of colonial government, culminating in a two-story governor's residence known as "Baranof Castle" in 1836; the building burned down in 1894, and the United States formally took possession of Alaska on this hill in 1867.

REPORTED ACTIVITY

Since at least the 1880s, newspapers and residents have described a "Lady in Blue," said to be a Russian bride who died before her wedding, seen drifting across the hilltop at night; some locals also describe a man in old military dress near the site at dawn.
