OVERVIEW

Bear Lake straddles the Idaho-Utah state line; the monster legend traces to an 1868 Deseret News account by Bear Lake Valley settler and judge Joseph C. Rich, who relayed reports from residents of St. Charles and Paris, Idaho, of a huge serpentine creature in the lake.

REPORTED ACTIVITY

Nineteenth-century witnesses described a creature 40 to 90 feet long moving "a mile a minute"; sightings continued into the 20th century, though Rich himself later admitted to embellishing the original account, and the legend endures as one of the best-known lake-monster stories in the American West.

VISITING

Bear Lake and its Idaho-side towns are open to the public, with monster-themed exhibits and tourism on both sides of the state line.
