DIRECTIONS →OVERVIEW
Bladenboro is a small town in Bladen County that became national news in the winter of 1953–1954 after a series of animal deaths.
REPORTED ACTIVITY
Beginning in December 1953, residents found dogs and other animals dead, described by witnesses as crushed and drained of blood; the "Beast of Bladenboro" was blamed, prompting armed nighttime patrols and search parties numbering in the hundreds. A bobcat was killed and presented as the culprit in January 1954, but many locals considered it too small to account for the attacks, and the case was never conclusively closed. The town now commemorates the legend annually with a "Beast Fest."
VISITING
The town is open to visitors; the annual Beast Fest is held each October.
