OVERVIEW

Farmer Oscar Fulk reportedly first spotted a huge turtle in the small lake on his farm near Churubusco in 1898; fifty years later, 1948 sightings by local fishermen of an alligator snapping turtle estimated at some 500 pounds turned the lake, by then called Fulk Lake, into a media sensation.

REPORTED ACTIVITY

In 1949, wire-service coverage drew thousands of sightseers and professional trappers to the farm; witnesses described a turtle the size of a dining table, with a final reported sighting on October 13, 1949, before the animal was never found despite a monthlong hunt.

VISITING

The lake sits on private farmland; Churubusco commemorates the legend each June with its Turtle Days festival.
