OVERVIEW

A peninsula off Devon Island in the Arctic Archipelago where Sir John Franklin's expedition wintered in 1845–46 before vanishing; it is now Beechey Island Sites National Historic Site of Canada and the most-visited historic site in the Arctic.

REPORTED ACTIVITY

Three of Franklin's crew — John Torrington, William Braine and John Hartnell — remain interred beneath weathered headboards, joined by Thomas Morgan of a later search party. Visitors consistently describe the site as intensely oppressive; the fate of the remaining 129 men has never been fully explained.

VISITING

Reachable only by Arctic expedition vessel; the graves and cairns are protected archaeological resources.
