The Belchen Tunnel — the White Woman
FOLLOWEptingen, Basel-Landschaft
DIRECTIONS →OVERVIEW
The Belchen Tunnel is a motorway tunnel on the A2 from Basel to Chiasso, linking Eptingen in Basel-Landschaft with Hägendorf in Solothurn. It opened in 1970 and is 3,180 m long.
HISTORY
The German Wikipedia's article on the White Lady describes how the old ghost became the modern 'phantom hitchhiker': a woman picked up by a driver who behaves strangely or not at all and then vanishes from the moving car. The best-known German-language example — found in English literature too — is the White Woman of the Belchen Tunnel, from the 1980s. The tunnel is regarded as a very dangerous road with a series of serious accidents.
REPORTED ACTIVITY
The tunnel's English article links a report in the Volksstimme of 25 January 2001 headlined 'Plötzlich war die Frau weg, fort, einfach nicht mehr da' — 'Suddenly the woman was gone, gone, simply no longer there' (the report itself was not read for this file). Recorded here as a modern legend of the road.
VISITING
The tunnel carries the A2 motorway; it is a road, not a place to stop.
