OVERVIEW

Bentonville Battlefield preserves the site of the largest land battle fought in North Carolina, a three-day engagement in March 1865; the Harper House on the grounds served as a field hospital for both sides during the fighting.

REPORTED ACTIVITY

Staff, re-enactors, and visitors have long reported the sounds and smells of battle — voices, gunfire, and smoke — along with apparitions of soldiers and of homeowner John Harper near the house and grounds.

VISITING

Open to the public as a state historic site with a visitor center.
