OVERVIEW

Built in 1679 by the Danish West India Company as Skytsborg, a watchtower guarding the harbour approach. The association with Edward Teach is a later tradition with no documentary basis. It is a US National Historic Landmark.

HISTORY

The tower has been a private residence, a hotel and a visitor attraction over the last century.

REPORTED ACTIVITY

The tower is reported locally as haunted, usually in connection with the pirate legend rather than with the Danish garrison who actually used it.

VISITING

Grounds and tower open to visitors; access has varied in recent years following storm damage.
