OVERVIEW

Opened in 1883 and closed in 1992, Boggo Road was Queensland's principal prison. Forty-two executions took place at the site before capital punishment was abolished in Queensland in 1922 — the first Australian jurisdiction to do so. The surviving No. 2 Division is heritage-listed.

HISTORY

The gaol saw major riots and hunger strikes in the 1970s and 1980s.

REPORTED ACTIVITY

The cell blocks are the focus of visitor reports and the site runs regular ghost tours.
