OVERVIEW
One of the oldest buildings in Bradford, a mile from the centre in East Bowling: a medieval pele tower with a seventeenth-century hall and a Georgian wing, home of the Bollings and then the Tempests, given to the city in 1912 and a museum since 1915. Bradford Museums keeps the Ghost Room as the Ghost Room.
HISTORY
After the Royalist victory at Adwalton Moor in June 1643 the Earl of Newcastle besieged Parliamentarian Bradford and was said to have ordered that no quarter be given; sleeping at Bolling Hall, he was woken three times by a woman pulling at the bedclothes and pleading for the town, and rescinded the order. The town was taken with few deaths. The story was current within a generation and is the city's founding ghost.
