OVERVIEW
One of the oldest independent libraries in the United States, founded in 1807 and housed since 1849 in a Beacon Street building overlooking the Granary Burying Ground.
REPORTED ACTIVITY
Nathaniel Hawthorne recorded seeing the recently deceased Reverend Thaddeus Mason Harris seated at his usual place reading the newspaper; the "friendly ghost" story remains part of Athenaeum folklore, alongside reports of a lingering presence in the reading rooms.
VISITING
