OVERVIEW
Constructed from 1690 into the 1790s on a volcanic hill 230 metres above the sea, Brimstone Hill was designed by British engineers and built almost entirely by enslaved African labour. It fell to the French after a month-long siege in 1782 and was returned the following year. UNESCO inscribed it in 1999.
HISTORY
The fortress was abandoned by the garrison in 1853 and left derelict for a century before restoration began.
