Brookfield Floating Bridge
FOLLOWBrookfield, VT
DIRECTIONS →OVERVIEW
A pontoon-style bridge across Sunset Lake, first built around 1820 after Daniel Belknap drowned crossing the lake's thin ice in 1813; the lake is too deep for pilings, so the roadway floats. It has been rebuilt many times.
REPORTED ACTIVITY
The bridge's origin in a fatal drowning anchors local lore about the lake, and the unusual crossing draws visitors and storytellers alike.
VISITING
A public bridge and lakeside, open to visitors.
