OVERVIEW

Brown Mountain is a low ridge in the Blue Ridge foothills near Linville Gorge, part of Pisgah National Forest, with public overlooks along NC Highway 181 and the Blue Ridge Parkway.

REPORTED ACTIVITY

On clear nights, especially in fall, observers report glowing orbs of light rising above the ridgeline and drifting or fading in the distance; the phenomenon has been documented since German engineer Gerard William de Brahm's 1771 journal, studied without firm resolution by the U.S. Geological Survey in 1913 and 1922, and remains a subject of ongoing amateur and academic investigation. Cherokee legend involving the phenomenon was first published in 1938 and its authenticity as genuine oral tradition is disputed by historians.

VISITING

Public overlooks are accessible via NC 181 (Brown Mountain Overlook) and the Blue Ridge Parkway.
