Bube's Brewery (Central Hotel)

OVERVIEW

A brewery complex on North Market Street in Mount Joy, Lancaster County, built by the Bavarian brewer Alois Bube from 1876 — brewhouse, bottling works and the Central Hotel — and the only intact brewery of its era in the country. It closed at Prohibition and reopened as restaurants in the 1980s; the aging cellars 43 feet down are the Catacombs dining room, and the hotel rooms are let.

HISTORY

Bube died in 1908; his family kept the buildings shut and unchanged for decades, which is why they survive.
