OVERVIEW

A short cobbled alley in the Barrio de Santa Catarina, Coyoacán, named for an old avocado tree that oral tradition places at the centre of a tragedy around the 1930s.

REPORTED ACTIVITY

The legend describes a soldier who walked the alley at night and a child drawn to the shine of his medals; the encounter ended in the boy's death beneath the tree. In one version the soldier raised a shrine to the Virgin so passers-by would pray for the child; in another he hanged himself from the same tree. Residents describe sudden cold, heaviness and silence, a small silhouette in the shadows, and crying or footsteps when the alley is empty.
