DIRECTIONS →OVERVIEW
Canóvanas is a municipality in north-eastern Puerto Rico. In March 1995 a series of livestock deaths in the area were reported in the Puerto Rican press, and the name chupacabra — goat-sucker — entered circulation. Reports spread across the island and then through the Americas.
HISTORY
The 1995 wave was investigated by local officials and covered heavily by regional media; explanations offered at the time included feral dogs.
REPORTED ACTIVITY
Descriptions of the animal varied widely between witnesses and shifted over time, which folklorists have noted is characteristic of a story spreading through media rather than of a single animal.
VISITING
An ordinary municipality; there is no site to visit. Recorded here because it is where the modern chupacabra account starts.
