OVERVIEW
Opened in 1828 in a damp valley below Mount Wellington, the Cascades Female Factory held convict women assigned to labour, and their children. Conditions were severe; in some years the majority of infants born or held there died. Over 6,000 women passed through. It is part of the Australian Convict Sites World Heritage listing.
HISTORY
Much of the complex was demolished; the yards and some walls survive, and the site is interpreted largely through the women's own records.
REPORTED ACTIVITY
The site is reported by visitors as deeply affecting and the yards feature in Hobart ghost tours. The interpretation on site is historical, and the women's history is the point of it.
VISITING
Open daily; guided tours and a dramatised interpretation run regularly.
