OVERVIEW
Castel dell'Ovo stands on the former island of Megaride, now a peninsula on the Gulf of Naples, between San Ferdinando and Chiaia, facing Mergellina. Greek settlers from Cumae founded a settlement around the harbour about 650 BC; it is the oldest castle in Naples.
HISTORY
In the Middle Ages the Roman poet Virgil had a reputation as a great sorcerer and predictor of the future. In the legend he put a magical egg into the foundations to support the fortifications; it remains there with his bones, and had the egg been broken, the castle would have been destroyed and a series of disasters would have followed for Naples.
