OVERVIEW

Laid out from 1871 and opened in 1876, the Colón Cemetery covers over 140 acres and holds some of the most elaborate funerary sculpture in the Americas. It remains in use.

HISTORY

The best-known grave is that of Amelia Goyri, who died in childbirth in 1901 and was buried with her infant at her feet. The tradition holds that when the grave was later opened the child was found in her arms.

REPORTED ACTIVITY

Devotion to La Milagrosa — the miraculous one — is continuous and public: visitors knock on the tomb, ask a favour and leave without turning their back. This is living folk practice, widely documented, and should be described as devotion rather than as a haunting.

VISITING

Open daily. The Goyri tomb is signposted and usually surrounded by flowers.
