Fireship of Baie des Chaleurs
FOLLOWBathurst, NB
DIRECTIONS →OVERVIEW
A recurring light phenomenon over Chaleur Bay, seen from Bathurst, New Brunswick and from New Carlisle on the Quebec shore, usually in the hours before a storm; it typically appears as an arc of light on the water.
REPORTED ACTIVITY
Witnesses have described a flaming three-masted galley, and the phenomenon has been reported by more people than any other apparition in Canada. Folk explanations include a cursed Portuguese slaver and pirate crews; proposed physical causes include St. Elmo's fire, undersea gas release and decaying vegetation. None is settled.
VISITING
Viewable from public shoreline along the bay.
