OVERVIEW

A 14-acre island roughly half a mile off Milford, connected to the mainland by a sandbar (tombolo) that is submerged at high tide and has a history of stranding visitors; it is now managed as a state Natural Area Preserve for nesting birds.

REPORTED ACTIVITY

Local legend describes three separate curses on the island — from a Paugussett sachem angered by its sale, from Captain William Kidd, who is said to have buried treasure there in 1699 before his arrest, and from sailors who allegedly hid stolen gold on the island in 1721 — and holds that structures built on the island have repeatedly failed or burned.

VISITING

Accessible on foot via the sandbar only at low tide outside the May 1–September 9 bird-nesting closure; crossing at the wrong tide is genuinely dangerous.
