OVERVIEW
The College of Charleston's Berry Hall stands on the former grounds of the Charleston Orphan House, founded in 1790 as the first municipally funded orphanage in the United States. Its infirmary was crowded during the 1918 influenza pandemic; the orphanage buildings were later demolished and the dorm opened in 1988.
REPORTED ACTIVITY
Students have long reported children's laughter and the sound of a childhood rhyme at night, along with unexplained noises attributed to the orphanage that once stood on the site.
