The Mills House
FOLLOWCharleston, SC
DIRECTIONS →OVERVIEW
Otis Mills opened this hotel at Meeting and Queen streets in 1853; it sheltered General Robert E. Lee during the great fire of December 1861 and served the Confederacy during the war. The original was demolished and rebuilt in 1968, reusing the historic ironwork balconies.
REPORTED ACTIVITY
Guests and staff report Confederate soldiers in the halls, phantom footsteps on the staircase, and a 19th-century gentleman who appears and vanishes; some attribute the activity to the site rather than the rebuilt structure.
VISITING
An operating hotel.
