OVERVIEW
Named for the wrought-iron gates decorated with broadswords and spears at 32 Legare Street, this early-1800s house was run from 1819 to the 1840s as a strict French boarding school for young women by Madame Ann Talvande, whose reputation suffered after a student, Maria Whaley, eloped in 1829.
REPORTED ACTIVITY
For generations, accounts have described the apparition of Madame Talvande walking the upstairs halls and piazza, pausing at bedroom doors as if still checking on her students before vanishing.
