OVERVIEW

A stone burial vault at Christ Church Parish Church. Between 1812 and 1820, on each occasion the vault was opened for a burial, the lead coffins inside were reportedly found disarranged — despite the entrance being sealed with cement and, on the last occasion, marked. In 1820 the governor, Lord Combermere, had the vault opened, found the coffins moved again, and ordered it emptied. It has stood empty ever since.

HISTORY

The case was recorded in the nineteenth century and has been examined repeatedly since. Proposed explanations include flooding, earth tremors and outright hoax; researchers have also questioned how much of the contemporary record is reliable.

REPORTED ACTIVITY

This is one of the most-cited unexplained cases in the Caribbean, and unusually for such a case it has a documented paper trail — though the reliability of that trail is itself disputed.

VISITING

The churchyard is open. The vault is empty and open, and is signposted.
