Château de Fougeret

OVERVIEW

The Château de Fougeret is at Queaux in the Vienne, on top of a 38-metre cliff dominating the Vienne valley, with ten hectares of grounds. It was built between the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, heavily renovated in the nineteenth, and has been a listed historical monument since 2010.

HISTORY

The present owners say they have witnessed paranormal events, and from 2010 they began organising paranormal nights in the château — done, on the published account, despite the very poor state of the building and the risk to visitors: electrical hazards, weak floors, no fire alarm, no safety lighting, no emergency exits.

REPORTED ACTIVITY

The concept worked. Television shows and a large number of YouTubers took it up, and Fougeret is now regularly described online and on television as the most haunted place in France. **vetted = false**, and for an unusually clear reason: the published account says outright that the story and the folklore around Fougeret are a tourist attraction to pay the bills. The entry keeps it as the honest example of how a modern haunted reputation is made — there is no tradition here older than 2010.
