OVERVIEW
Raised between 1805 and 1820 under Henri Christophe to defend the young republic against a French return, the Citadelle stands at 900 metres on the Bonnet à l'Evêque. Thousands of workers were employed in its construction and many died. It remains the largest fortress in the Americas and was inscribed by UNESCO in 1982.
HISTORY
The fortress still holds hundreds of cannon and stacks of cannonballs. Its guns were never fired in war; the invasion it was built to repel never came.
REPORTED ACTIVITY
Local tradition holds that those who died building it remain on the mountain, and visitors have reported voices on the approach and in the lower galleries.
VISITING
Reached on foot or by horse from Milot. The climb is steep and the weather turns quickly.
