OVERVIEW
A pit about 40 feet deep in the side of Ice Mountain near Coudersport, found in 1894 by prospectors looking for silver, which grows icicles and a floor of ice from spring into late summer and is bare in winter. It was a roadside attraction for most of the twentieth century, closed in 1990 and reopened by new owners in 2014.
HISTORY
A 1913 Popular Science Monthly article described it; geologists explain it as a glacière — cold winter air trapped in the rock, freezing the spring melt that seeps in. The explanation does not make the sight less odd.
