OVERVIEW

A small uninhabited island off Peter Island, protected as a national park and a seabird nesting site. The tradition — that Blackbeard marooned fifteen crewmen here with a bottle of rum — is unsupported by any contemporary record, and the phrase became famous through Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island in 1883.

HISTORY

The island has no fresh water, which is the detail the marooning story turns on.

REPORTED ACTIVITY

The islet has a persistent reputation among boat crews. There is nothing on it but rock, cactus and birds.

VISITING

Landing is restricted to protect nesting seabirds; the island is generally viewed from the water.
