OVERVIEW

A 1,000-acre state park centered on Chapman Falls on the Eightmile River, known for a series of glacially carved potholes in the streambed and for the colonial-era folk name attached to the site.

REPORTED ACTIVITY

Local legend holds that the Devil was seen playing his fiddle atop the falls, or that the potholes were burned into the rock by his hooves as he fled after getting his tail wet; geologists attribute the potholes to rocks grinding in swirling eddies over thousands of years, but the folklore persists in local storytelling.
