OVERVIEW

A roughly 40-foot circle of bare soil in a wooded tract of Chatham County, surrounded by otherwise healthy forest; the clearing has drawn curiosity and local legend for generations, with proposed explanations ranging from soil chemistry to a former Native American ceremonial site.

REPORTED ACTIVITY

Local legend holds that the Devil paces the circle at night; visitors have long claimed that objects left inside the ring are found outside it by morning, and some report dogs refusing to approach.
