Diana of the Dunes
FOLLOWOgden Dunes, IN
DIRECTIONS →OVERVIEW
University of Chicago-educated Alice Gray left city life in 1915 to live in a shanty along the Lake Michigan shoreline, becoming a sensationalized press subject known as "Diana of the Dunes" before her death in 1925; the National Park Service now marks the area with a hiking route, "Diana's Dare," through Indiana Dunes National Park.
REPORTED ACTIVITY
Hikers and area residents have long reported seeing a woman bathing in the lake and running through the dunes to dry off, a figure many associate with Gray's spirit.
VISITING
The Diana of the Dunes trail is open to the public within Indiana Dunes National Park.
