OVERVIEW

A massive Gothic-style former prison that pioneered the "separate system" of solitary confinement intended to inspire penitence — the origin of the word penitentiary.

HISTORY

Operated 1829–1971 and once held Al Capone and bank robber "Slick Willie" Sutton. After closing it sat abandoned for decades before reopening as a museum.

REPORTED ACTIVITY

Cellblocks 12 and 4 and Capone’s cell are focal points for reported shadow figures, footsteps, and voices; it is among the most investigated sites in the country.

VISITING

Open to the public for daytime tours and seasonal night programming.
