OVERVIEW

Begun in 1539 and developed over 250 years, El Morro withstood attacks by Drake, Cumberland and the Dutch, and was shelled by the United States Navy in 1898. It is administered by the US National Park Service and inscribed by UNESCO.

HISTORY

The best-known feature in folklore is the Garita del Diablo, the Devil's Sentry Box, a lookout at the water's edge on the adjoining wall.

REPORTED ACTIVITY

Legend holds that sentries posted at the Garita del Diablo vanished from it, leaving only their uniforms. The story is old and widely told; the Park Service treats it as folklore.

VISITING

Open daily. The grounds and the sentry boxes are part of the standard visitor route.
