Exmoor — the Beast of Exmoor
FOLLOWSouth Molton, England
DIRECTIONS →OVERVIEW
The Beast of Exmoor is the best-known of Britain's 'big cat' stories: a large cat said to roam Exmoor in south-west England.
HISTORY
Sightings were reported as early as 1970. In 1983 the South Molton farmer Eric Ley said he had lost more than a hundred sheep in three months, all with violent throat wounds. The Daily Express offered a reward for film of the animal, and the government deployed Royal Marine snipers to hunt it. One cryptozoologist had to be rescued two days after springing his own trap.
REPORTED ACTIVITY
LEGEND. No large cat has been positively identified; the 1983 killings are now attributed to other causes such as large dogs. A carcass one paper presented as the Beast turned out to be a seal. Sightings continue long after any escaped leopard or puma would have died.
VISITING
Exmoor National Park and its farmland; the farms are private.
