Fort Charlotte
FOLLOWNassau, New Providence
DIRECTIONS →
OVERVIEW
Built from 1789 under Governor Lord Dunmore and named for Queen Charlotte. It cost far more than authorised and, like Fort St. Catherine, never fired a shot in anger. The dungeons, powder magazine and rock-cut passages survive.
HISTORY
The fort's cells and so-called dungeons are a fixture of the visitor tour, though their use has been considerably embroidered over the years.
REPORTED ACTIVITY
Guides and visitors report voices and footfalls in the underground passages. Local tradition attaches to the cells specifically; no account has been independently verified.
VISITING
Open daily. Guided tours cover the passages and battery.
