OVERVIEW
Built by the French in 1705 as Fort Royal and renamed after the British took the island. On 19 October 1983 Prime Minister Maurice Bishop and seven others were executed in the fort's courtyard during the collapse of the People's Revolutionary Government — the events that triggered the United States invasion days later.
HISTORY
The fort remains in use by the Royal Grenada Police Force; parts are open to visitors.
REPORTED ACTIVITY
The courtyard has a reputation on the island that is bound up entirely with 1983. Reports there should be read in that light and treated with care — this is recent history and there are people alive who lost family in it.
VISITING
Partly open to visitors; the working police areas are not.
