OVERVIEW

A Revolutionary War earthwork fort overlooking the Thames River, site of the September 6, 1781 Battle of Groton Heights, in which British forces under Benedict Arnold overran the garrison; defenders under Colonel William Ledyard were killed after attempting to surrender, and the fort is preserved today as a state park with the Groton Monument and the restored Ebenezer Avery House, where the wounded were carried.

REPORTED ACTIVITY

Visitors and staff report phantom footsteps and a sense of being watched inside the Ebenezer Avery House, along with unexplained cold spots on the battlefield grounds, which many attribute to the violence of the 1781 massacre.

VISITING

A public state park, open daily with seasonal access to the museum and Avery House.
