OVERVIEW

A World War II harbor-defense installation built in 1941 within what is now Cape Henlopen State Park, once home to more than 2,200 soldiers manning coastal artillery batteries against the threat of German U-boats operating off the Delaware coast.

REPORTED ACTIVITY

Long-standing local legend describes a "Phantom Ship" seen offshore on foggy nights, tied to accounts of U-boat activity and ships lost near the cape, along with reports of a shadowy figure near one of the fire-control towers.

VISITING

Open to the public as a state park historic area, with Battery 519 operating as a museum.
