OVERVIEW

Built by the Dutch in 1636 on the cliff above Oranjestad. On 16 November 1776 its guns answered the salute of the American brig Andrew Doria — the first recognition of the United States flag by a foreign power. Statia was then one of the busiest trading ports in the world, and that trade included enslaved Africans.

HISTORY

The British sacked the island in 1781 in retaliation, an event from which its commerce never recovered.

REPORTED ACTIVITY

The fort and the ruined warehouses along the shoreline both carry local reports of voices and movement.

VISITING

Open to visitors; the fort houses government offices and a museum.
