OVERVIEW

Completed in 1904 on land donated by the Presbyterian Church, Fort William H. Seward was the first permanent military post in the Alaska territory, active until 1944; several of its former officers' quarters, including the building now run as the Hotel Halsingland, still stand as a National Historic Landmark.

REPORTED ACTIVITY

The Syfy series Ghost Hunters investigated the fort and interviewed Haines residents about their encounters, including a witness who described hearing a floorboard creak and turning to see a full apparition; other residents describe footsteps and voices in the former barracks buildings.

VISITING

The fort grounds are open to the public; individual buildings are private residences or businesses, including a working hotel.
