OVERVIEW
Built from the 1770s on the Cabrits peninsula, Fort Shirley once held some fifty buildings. In April 1802 the enslaved soldiers of the 8th West India Regiment mutinied here; the outcome contributed directly to the 1807 decision to free all enslaved men serving in the British army — the first mass emancipation in the British Empire.
HISTORY
The fort was abandoned in 1854 and reclaimed by forest until restoration began in the 1980s.
