OVERVIEW
Raised first in timber in 1614 near the spot where the survivors of the Sea Venture came ashore in 1609, and rebuilt in stone repeatedly through the nineteenth century. Its magazines, tunnels and gun galleries survive and are open as a museum.
HISTORY
The fort was never taken and never fired on an enemy, spending three centuries as a garrison posting.
REPORTED ACTIVITY
Staff and visitors have reported footsteps in the lower tunnels and figures in period dress in the magazine passages. The reports are informal and undocumented.
VISITING
Open to the public as a museum; the underground passages are part of the visitor route.
