OVERVIEW
Built beginning in 1867 near Devils Lake, Fort Totten is one of the most complete surviving frontier military posts in the country, with sixteen original brick structures. Decommissioned in 1890, it served for decades as a federal Indian boarding school before becoming a state historic site in 1960.
REPORTED ACTIVITY
Staff and visitors report footsteps, voices, and apparitions of soldiers around the parade ground and quarters; the site is a stop on regional ghost-history programs.
VISITING
Open to the public seasonally as a state historic site and museum.
